New Dean of the Faculty of Philology elected

Dr hab. Elżbieta Górska has been elected Dean of the JU Faculty of Philology for the term 2012-2016.

Elżbieta Górska is an associate professor at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Jagiellonian University and a visiting professor at the Institute of English Studies of the University of Silesia. She specializes in Arabic linguistics, especially in its grammar and lexicology and the related issues of translation and teaching of the Arabic language.

Besides numerous articles, she has published two monographs on Arabic syntax: Multiattributive Nominal Phrases in Modern Written Arabic (1991) and Studium kontrastywne składni arabskich i polskich współczesnych tekstów literackich, (Contrastive Study of Syntax of Contemporary Literary Texts in Polish and Arabic, 2000), and, together with M. Skoczek and A. Hasan, a monograph on teaching Arabic at Polish universities, Dydaktyka języka arabskiego(Arabic Language Teaching, 1999) as well as two textbooks for Arabic studies students (with A. Czapkiewicz – 1982 and A. Hasan – 2002).

She has frequently been invited to Arab countries. In 2004 and 2005 she delivered lectures at the Damascus Academy of Arabic Language and at the Universities in Damascus, Beirut, Aden and Sana, where the series of her lectures was published in Arabic. As a longtime head of the A. Czapkiewicz Foundation for Arabic Studies (1991-2011), she has co-edited conference papers series published by the Foundation, .

Since 1997 she has been a member of the Executive Board of the Polish Oriental Society.

Since 2003 she has been a member of the Editorial Board of the periodical Arabic and Islamic Studies.

Since 2005 she has been a member of the Committee on Oriental Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

From 2005 to 2008 she was a consultant, and since 2009 has been a member of the State Examination Committee of the Ministry of Justice responsible forArabic Sworn Translator Exams.

From 2005 to 2012 (two terms) she was the Vice-dean for Educational Affairs of the JU Faculty of Philology.
