Welcome to the Institute of English Philology at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland. The Institute is the oldest and one of the largest of its kind in Poland. Our staff consists of over 50 scholars in various fields; and our students number 400 undergraduates, who attend either the regular five-year course and shorter supplementary or extramural M.A. courses. Our Institute offers a choice of M.A. seminars in the following five areas: English and American Literature, Cultural Studies, Linguistics, Teaching English as a Foreign Language, Translation and Interpreting. It also monitors the curriculum in eight English-language colleges in southern Poland. The Institute cooperates on a regular basis with many university centres in Poland and worldwide. Every three years, the Institute hosts a large international English and American Studies conference, unofficially known as the Cracow April Conference. The Institute's staff includes many prominent scholars in the history and theory of English and American Literature, British and American Cultural Studies, Linguistics and Pragmatics, Methodology of Teaching English as a Foreign Language, as well as experts in the theory and practice of Translation and Interpreting. Graduates of the Institute develop their careers as teachers of English, translators and interpreters, editors, copy writers and publishers. Many of our graduates continue their university education by pursuing postgraduate and Ph.D. courses.
