GENERAL INFORMATION

On October 1^st, 1995 the Jagiellonian University launched a two-year postgraduate diploma course of evening study in translation and interpreting affiliated to the Faculty of Arts. In 1999, in response to the emerging needs connected with Poland's prospective accession to the European Union, a new, one-year Postgraduate Diploma Course in Conference Interpreting was initiated as part of the Postgraduate School for Translators and Interpreters. The entrance examination, the syllabus, and the final examination for this course have been designed in compliance with the standards laid down by the International SCIC Consortium for the European Master's in Interpreting. To supplement these courses, we launched several further curricula: a one-year Course in Literary Translation, a one-year Course in Interpreting (as a branch of the Postgraduate School for Translators affiliated to the State Higher Vocational School in Krosno), and a Postgraduate Diploma Course in Specialist Translation. We are also planning to launch an intensive Polish Language Course for Foreign Interpreters and Translators. Since 2004 The Postgraduate School for Translators and Interpreters has been a component part of the UNESCO Chair for Translation Studies and Intercultural Communication of the Jagiellonian University of Krakow.

Two successive TEMPUS programmes sponsored by the European Union have helped the Postgraduate School for Translators and Interpreters to develop, providing our academic teaching staff with opportunities to observe the work of renowned European schools and research centres for translation and interpreting, such as those affiliated to the Universities in Vienna, Kopenhagen, Joensuu, and Aarhus. Thanks to our work in partnership with research centres for intercultural communication, we are the first school in Poland to offer courses of study for business presentations, negotiation, and technical writing in foreign languages.

The Postgraduate School for Translators and Interpreters maintains regular contact with representatives of numerous local and international institutions involved in translator and interpreter training. To provide for proper exchange of professional experience, the School organizes academic conferences and meetings in cooperation with TEPIS (the Polish Association for Legal, Court, and Economic Translators and Interpreters). In collaboration with the European Commission and several European universities, the UNESCO Chair for Translation Studies and Intercultural Communication is now preparing the ''European Master's in Translation'' programme.

The Jagiellonian University Postgraduate School for Translators and Interpreters offers courses for translators and interpreters working between Polish and English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. We also run special courses in Polish language and culture.

In collaboration with the European Parliament in Brussels, the Postgraduate School For Interpreters at the Jagiellonian University organises summer training sessions for best graduates of Poland's schools of interpreting. Participation in the summer training school is free.

We offer a range of opportunities for training and study to suit a variety of individual needs. At our School, active translators and interpreters will be able to enhance their qualifications and practical skills, extend their knowledge of the strategies and techniques of translation and interpreting, observe the latest workshop developments, and learn how to apply state-of-the-art technology. Beginners with a good knowledge of foreign languages and aptitude for translation and/or interpreting, committed to acquiring a sound basis for a prospective career in the profession will appreciate the excellent opportunities our School offers in its range of postgraduate diploma curricula.

The Jagiellonian University Postgraduate School for Translators and Interpreters also provides in-service training courses to develop language skills and non-verbal techniques of communication and presentation for business negotiations.

The Jagiellonian University Postgraduate School for Translators and Interpreters has at its disposal a state-of-the-art teaching laboratory for conference interpreting. Students have access to a computer laboratory and translation aid software.

Our School's tutorial staff consists of distinguished active translators and interpreters, scholars, and theoreticians of linguistics, translation studies, law, economics, and psychology, many of them are faculty members of the Jagiellonian University and other Polish institutions of higher education, as well as visiting professors from abroad.

On successful completion of all the required modules making up the syllabus, students of the Postgraduate Diploma Course in Interpreting are admitted to the final task examination, which consists of an examination in interpreting from and into their language B, and from their language C into Polish (or, in the case of foreign students, their language A). The texts used for the examination come from authentic materials selected according to European Master's requirements; candidates are assessed by an examining board of highly qualified specialists from the Jagiellonian University, the European Parliament, and the European Commission. Students of the Postgraduate Diploma Course in Specialist Translation can cover some of the modules extramurally, via internet. Having received credits for all the required modules, they can take the final exam (translation of authentic specialist texts).

The training workshops run as part of the Literary Translation Course conclude with a diploma assignment in literary translation - the text is selected by one of Krakow's publishing houses.
