HISTORY AIMS MEMBERSHIP EXECUTIVE BOARD ADDRESS

ORIGINS OF THE SOCIETY

Cracow Tertium Society for the Promotion of Language Studies: A Non-Profit Organisation was born from our fascination with verbal and non-verbal communication. It was founded by a group of academics from the Foreign and Polish Language Departments of the Jagiellonian University and registered in the Court of the Voivodeship of Cracow on November 9, 1995.

AIMS OF THE SOCIETY

'The Society promotes teaching, training and research on verbal communication conducted as a voluntary outreach program to the academic community'
(para. 6 of the Society's Statute)

CONCERNS OF THE SOCIETY. COMMUNICATION AND TRANSLATION:

The name of our Society echoes the well-known Latin proverb tertium non datur (there is no third solution). However, our Society holds that the opposite is true: tertium datur - there is always a third solution, no text or translation is perfect and every text can be improved. Notwithstanding this, the task of experts in verbal communication is to carry out research and practical training in order to ensure that original texts and translations are written in the most correct, precise and most flexible language, one which ably expresses changing extra-linguistic reality.

The Polish language today is developing very rapidly under the influence of this changing reality. Many original Polish texts (and their translations) appear in an imperfect verbal form. Said texts fail not only in terms of stylistics but more importantly in terms of their basic communication purposes: their intended message hardly (if at all) reaches the intended addressees. For after all, maximally unimpeded international (and intra-national) communication is a matter of highest priority in this era of ever deepening European integration.

STATUTORY ACTIVITIES

The present situation requires scholars to initiate research and training in verbal communication, particularly in the area of translation studies. Individual members of our Society had already been involved in such research and training prior to the establishment of the Tertium Society. Our Society has outlined for itself the following basic statutory aims in the promotion of language studies:

(para. 7 of the Society's Statute)

At present, the financing of publication projects has been selected as a priority task by the Executive Board. Hence, it has decided to support the publication of a bi-annual journal devoted to practical and theoretical aspects of literary translation entitled Przekładaniec. The nine issues published to date have dealt not only with English-Polish translation, but also German, Italian, and Russian-Polish translations.

We have also initiated a new series entitled Language and Communication, which is devoted to the publication of the proceedings of the Society's conferences, ones we hold in Cracow every second year. This series also includes other publications related to language communication, for example on conference interpreting, written translation and communication in the European Union.

The Society co-operates regularly with the Jagiellonian University Graduate School for Translators and Interpreters, and intends to publish collections of bilingual model text types that will provide useful tools for students and professional translators.
